What Is the Meaning of the Fool Tarot Card?

Home / Tarot / What Is the Meaning of the Fool Tarot Card?

The Fool tarot card is one of the most iconic and important cards in the whole deck. The whole Tarot deck itself represents the Fool’s journey and development. Without this important card, the deck wouldn’t have nearly as much meaning.

But what, exactly, is the meaning of the Fool card? How can you apply this card to your life? In this article, we’ll explore the meaning of this important Tarot card.

About the Fool Tarot Card

The Fool Tarot card generally depicts a man standing at the edge of the cliff. He holds in his hand a stick with a bag tied to it, suggesting that he is about to embark on an adventure.

The Fool signifies potential, and its number is 0 – the number of infinite possibilities. The image of the card suggests that this free-spirited man is open to all possibilities and ready to live life spontaneously.

Meaning of the Fool Tarot

The meaning of the Fool tarot, like other cards in the deck, depends on whether you pull the card upright or reversed.

Meaning of the Fool – Upright

The Fool signifies new beginnings, spontaneity, and pure potential.

As if you were starting a journey, this card indicates that new things are on the horizon. You are heading into unknown territory, but things are looking good.

Armed with your intuition, determination, and the strength of your heart, this card signifies that you will meet new challenges and experiences. However, this is among the most important part of your journey.

Being foolish is a term often applied to people who are acting irresponsibly. However, these definitions have a negative connotation. Not having responsibilities can be enlightening and extraordinarily fulfilling if you seize the right opportunities.

Meaning of the Fool – Reversed

The Fool reversed suggests the opposite of a journey being started. You may have intended to start a new project, journey, or venture – only to find that new obstacles or challenges may prevent you from getting where you want to go.

This could also signify stagnant energy. You may need to push yourself to make changes or to trust in the unknown. If you have become overly reliant or comfortable in a situation, the Fool reversed implies that it’s time to make a move – lest you risk losing your potential.

The Fool could also signify that your behavior is too risky or dangerous – in other words, that you’re being too foolish. While the Fool reminds us that it’s important to be spontaneous and adventurous, it’s important to remain aware of the consequences of our actions.

The Fool reversed reminds you not to get too caught up in doubts and worries. Live in the moment and allow yourself the freedom to explore and express.

To Wrap It Up

The Fool is one of the most important cards in the entire Tarot deck, alongside other major arcana like the Hierophant. The Fool’s Journey tells of the spiritual development of an irresponsible individual as they progress through the different Tarot cards in search of Truth.

The definitions in this article were based on the popular Rider Waite deck.
