Haircut Lunar Calendar
The traditional best (and worst) days to cut your hair, set by the Moon's sign and phase. Time your trim for faster growth, thicker regrowth and longer-lasting shine.
How to choose the best time to cut your hair
In lunar tradition, when you cut matters as much as how. Two things set the timing: the Moon's phase (whether it is growing or shrinking) and the zodiac signthe Moon is travelling through that day. Put together, they tell you whether a trim will encourage lush, fast regrowth — or quietly work against you.
Waxing vs. waning Moon
- Waxing Moon (growing): cut when you want hair to grow back faster and feel fuller and stronger at the roots. This is the classic window for anyone trying to grow their hair out.
- Waning Moon (shrinking): cut when you want to slow regrowth and strengthen the roots — ideal for keeping a style neat for longer, or taming hair that grows too quickly.
Lunar days to avoid
Tradition advises skipping a haircut on a few sensitive lunar days, when results are said to disappoint regardless of the sign:
- the New Moon — a low-energy reset day for the body;
- the 9th, 15th, 23rd and 29th lunar days.
Eclipse windows (solar or lunar) are also considered unsuitable. When in doubt, favour a day when the Moon sits in one of the supportive signs below and the lunar day is clear.
The Moon's sign — the deciding factor
The sign the Moon is in shapes how your hair responds. Here is what each is traditionally associated with for cutting:
Tips for colouring, perms & styling
- Colour & chemical treatments (dye, perms, straightening) are traditionally best when the Moon is in Virgo, with Leo a strong second for rich, glossy colour.
- Volume & updos hold best with the Moon in the airy signs Gemini and Libra.
- Slow, dry or brittle hair? A trim with the Moon in Cancer or Pisces slows regrowth — useful if your hair grows faster than you'd like.
