Most people who know any numerology know one number: their life path. It is the easiest to calculate and the most written about, and it is one fifth of a chart.
A full numerology chart has five core numbers. Two come from your birth date, three come from the name on your birth certificate, and they answer different questions. The life path describes the road. The expression describes what you have to work with. The soul urge describes what you actually want, which is not always the same thing.
The five core numbers

Only the life path uses the date. The middle three all come from the name you were given at birth, which is why numerology asks for that name rather than the one you use now. If you changed it, the birth name still gives the core chart; the current name is read separately as an overlay.
The letter grid
Every letter carries a number, assigned in order and repeating after nine. This is the Pythagorean system, the one used almost everywhere in the West.

Add the letters you need, then reduce the total by adding its digits together until you reach a single digit. The one exception is below.
A worked example
Take the name MARIA GARCIA.
MARIA is M=4, A=1, R=9, I=9, A=1, which totals 24. GARCIA is G=7, A=1, R=9, C=3, I=9, A=1, which totals 30. Every letter together is 54, and 5 + 4 = 9. The expression number is 9.
For the soul urge, take only the vowels: A, I, A from MARIA and A, I, A from GARCIA. That is 1 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 1 = 22. Here is where people go wrong. You do not reduce 22 to 4. Eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are master numbers and stay as they are. The soul urge is 22.
For the personality, take only the consonants: M, R, G, R, C. That is 4 + 9 + 7 + 9 + 3 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. The personality number is 5.
The birthday number is simply the day of the month, reduced. Born on the 4th, it is 4. Born on the 29th, it is 2 + 9 = 11, which is a master number and stays 11.
The life path comes from the date. Reduce the month, the day and the year separately, then add those three and reduce again. For 4 March 1990: month 3, day 4, year 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 and then 1 + 9 = 10 and 1 + 0 = 1. So 3 + 4 + 1 = 8. The life path is 8. Our life path calculator does this and shows the same working.
Master numbers, and why they matter here
Eleven, 22 and 33 are the only totals that survive the reduction. The tradition treats them as higher-intensity versions of the number they would reduce to: 11 is a charged 2, 22 a charged 4, 33 a charged 6. They are read as harder to live with rather than better, because the tradition holds that the potential arrives before the ability to handle it.
They matter most in the soul urge and expression, where a master number describes a want or a capacity that is genuinely outsized. Notice in the example above that MARIA GARCIA's soul urge is 22 while every other number in the chart is single digit. That is the shape of a chart with one loud voice in it.
Reading the five together
The useful part is the friction between them, not any single number.
An expression of 8 with a soul urge of 2 is someone equipped for scale and authority who actually wants closeness and partnership, which is a recognisable kind of successful and quietly unhappy. A personality of 5 with a life path of 4 meets the world as a free spirit and is in fact building something slow and structural. Where two numbers disagree is where the tradition says the interesting part of a person is.
The most common mistake is reading the life path alone and concluding the system does not fit you. Of course it does not. It is one number out of five, and it is the one that describes the road rather than the driver.
What each number is held to mean
The nine base meanings run the same way in every position, and the position sets the context. 1 leads, 2 partners, 3 expresses, 4 builds, 5 changes, 6 nurtures, 7 seeks, 8 achieves, 9 gives. Read as a life path, 7 is a life spent looking for the answer. Read as a soul urge, 7 is someone who wants solitude and depth regardless of what their life actually looks like. Read as a personality, 7 is someone who comes across as reserved and hard to read on first meeting.
