The zodiac is not twelve unrelated personalities that somebody invented one at a time. It is a four-by-three grid. Four elements, three modalities, twelve cells, and every combination filled exactly once. Learn the grid and you can derive most of what a sign is supposed to mean without memorising a single trait list.

The element is the raw material. It tells you what a sign is made of and what it treats as real. Earth signs trust what can be counted. Water signs trust what can be felt. The modality is the behaviour. Cardinal signs open things, fixed signs sustain them, mutable signs change and dissolve them. Aries starts at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox, Capricorn at the December solstice. The modality sequence is the solar year.

Read any cell as a sentence. Scorpio is fixed water: feeling that will not move. Gemini is mutable air: thought that will not sit still. Capricorn is cardinal earth: material things, started and driven. Leo is fixed fire: warmth that does not waver, which is loyalty when you like it and stubbornness when you do not.
That is the whole system. Sign meanings that cannot be traced back to a cell are usually later decoration.
Why same-element signs get along
Here is where the geometry does real work. Signs of the same element sit four apart on the wheel. Four signs at 30 degrees each is 120 degrees, which is a trine, the most harmonious aspect in astrology. Aries to Leo is 120 degrees. Leo to Sagittarius is 120 degrees.
